I hated speaking up when I was in school. And I hated when professors "graded" every comment I might make. And yet now I see how important class participation is to the success of a course. When students are engaged and talking about the material, everyone benefits. Just notice how the class attention level increases when a student is speaking. It changes the entire classroom dynamic for the better.

So here is the deal: 85

85 is your baseline participation grade in my class. If you come to class regularly, on time, and at least appear to be following along, you will get an 85. Solid B. You can raise that 85 over the semester by consistently adding value to classroom discussions, and by joining in the Participation Forum on this blog. You can also lower it. By texting, surfing, skipping class, coming late, talking when not appropriate, showing disrespect, blah blah blah.

If you don't like speaking up in class, no problem. But at least give it a try. You might like it.
