I tried something new last semester. All my tests were open notes. You could bring anything with you that was on paper. No screens. I adjusted the tests to get rid of simple definition questions, of course.

The results? Scores were about the same as without notes, but students seemed less stressed. I think it is a better way, and plan to continue.
