Going through the Motions

Every semester, I have a few more students who seem to think that if they simply show up for class and attempt to do what is asked, they should at least get a B. They seem to believe that we professors are grading effort (or worse, the appearance of effort) instead of demanding mastery of the course material. Maybe some of us are. I'm not. If you want a good grade, you need to master the material.

Remember, your grade is not important to me. What is important to me is that you spend as much "quality time" with the course material as possible, which will lead to mastery. And my job is to use whatever means necessary to achieve just that. So if you are just going through the motions, you will probably be disappointed with your final grade.
