Your goal: Get the highest grade possible with the least amount of effort.

My goal: Get as much effort from you as possible so that you master the material.

See the problem? I think about this tension all the time, and every assignment, test, project and policy is carefully developed and selected to encourage, persuade, force (dare I say incentivize? I hate that word) you into spending quality time with the course material. So while your grade is of the utmost importance to you, it is not that important to me, except as a proxy for the time you spent with the course material.
