The Problem with Magical Thinking

Every semester I have a handful of students who fail the first test. And then fail the second test. And maybe even the third. When they finally come to talk to me, I ask:

"How did you change your approach to mastering the material after you failed the first test."

And they look at me blankly. Because they didn't. They kept doing the same thing that didn't work the first time. Just HOPING that they would do better the next time.

Hoping doesn't work. If you are not doing well, you have to change your approach. It's that simple.
